The decisions on the suspension of members who obtained nominations from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) for the upcoming General Election will be taken at the next Working Committee (WC) meeting, United National Party (UNP) General-Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.
Issuing a media statement today (27), the General Secretary said, “The Members in question have not complied with the UNP Constitution, and have not obtained the prior approval of the Working Committee."
“The Party Leadership has decided to take action against those who want to contest from another party under section 3(h) of the party constitution,” he added.
Mr. Kariyawasam said the party had decided to call for explanation from those who had opted to contest from another party.
Around 70 former UNP MPs have given in nominations to contest under the Samagi Jana Balawegaya led by former Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.
No rightMeanwhile, responding to the statement, SJB candidate Sujeewa Senasinghe has said that no one has the right to take disciplinary action against the SJB.
“We have formed SJB with the approval of UNP working committee. Therefore none of has violated the party constitution... If someone is to be suspended, it has to be the UNP general secretary and others who do not know the party constitution," he has said.
