Distant learning programs for school children with assistance of state, private media

The Cabinet of Ministers has given its approval to implement a series of educational programs with the assistance of government and private television and broadcasting channels.

The implementation will be in collaboration with the National Institute of Education (NIE) and the State Ministry of Educational Reforms, Open Universities and Distant Education Promotion.

Relevant decision has been taken following the submission made by the Minister of Education during the meeting of Cabinet Ministers held on Monday (02).

In April, two State broadcasting channels were previously authorized to continue teaching activities under the distant education methodology, taking into account the inconveniences caused by the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic for proceeding with academic activities in schools.

However, it has been perceived that precise optional distant educational methodologies are in need to be applied for the continuation of academic activities as reopening schools was pushed back by two weeks due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic situation resurfacing in the country.

Hence, the government has decided to broadcast television educational programs for students from Grade 3 – 13 in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages.
