Access completes scope at Nanotechnology and Science Park

Access Engineering PLC (AEL), one of Sri Lanka’s foremost civil engineering and construction enterprises, completed the construction of phase 1B at the Nanotechnology and Science Park in Pitipana North, Homagama recently.

AEL, the primary contractor of the project, was awarded the assignment by the Ministry of Technology on behalf of the Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (Pvt) Ltd (SLINTEC) and began construction of phase 1B back in March 2018 and subsequently completed its scope in June 2021.

AEL’s ambit in this project included the expansion of the main laboratory and the accommodation building and the construction of a new gatehouse with a canteen building covering a gross floor area of approximately 17,000 square meters for the Nanotechnology Centre of Excellence. The main laboratory building expanded by AEL is an 8 storey building equipped with glass roof space frames and a skylight on the ground floor while the 8 storied accommodation building consists of 52 rooms and family suites along with 2 badminton courts.

The buildings are also equipped with solar PV panels and all installed MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) equipment are compatible with the latest Building Management System (BMS).

The state of the art facility aims at providing the necessary infrastructure for research and innovation of technologies in various fields by scientists of local and international entities whilst offering significant opportunities to nurture young researchers in the pursuit of scientific discovery.

AEL takes great pride in noting that the project has received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification under the Platinum category, the highest certification awarded by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
